Meet Tan, PIN Salon's Stylist of the Month for October!
How did you get into doing hair?
When I was fresh out of high school I knew that I wanted to do something creative. At that time, I was choosing between interior design and doing hair. Either way, I needed to be creative, to somehow have my finger on the pulse of fashion-forward, avant-garde trends. As you might have guessed, I chose to pursue a hairstyling career. I went to hair school in Austin and later got into a top salon in Austin. I was excited to be the youngest one in a really talented group of stylists, who hailed from high caliber programs such as Frederic fekkai and vidal sasson, the godfather of hair. My time in the Austin hair world was a great learning experience.
How would you define PIN’s style when it comes to hair?
PIN is attuned to functional, simple styles. At PIN, stylists respect the flow of the hair and let it fall where it naturally falls without fighting it. As you can imagine, this applies to both haircuts and hair color. PIN is also environmentally oriented as well, the salon is always looking for the latest and greatest in organic hair care.
How would you describe your clientele?
My clients are largely young professionals. They are in tune with nature and know who they are. I love my clientele, they are nice, personable, and never pretentious.
What is your signature hairstyle?
In studying hair, I was always taught to go with the flow of the hair, and to honor the pre-existing direction and texture. When I envision a hairstyle, I keep these two things in mind along with the shape of the face. All of these things must be connected in order to create a look that is going to be easy for the client to recreate at home. To me, a good haircut is one that clients can reproduce at home. I always aim to make detail-oriented haircuts that grow out nicely.
Are there any dos and don’ts that you abide by when cutting hair?
First thing’s first, you must always cater to what the client wants. Even if the idea seems out of the box, there are no rules when it comes to hairstyling, haircuts should be as unique as the people wearing them.
What haircuts are you seeing for fall?
I’m still seeing a lot of mid-length cuts, ones that just barely graze the collarbone. This length is perfect – it’s not too long, you can still pull it up in a ponytail, and it is very modern!
What are your favorite color trends for fall?
I prefer natural tones with it comes to hair color – however the pastel tones I’ve been seeing lately in the salon are very trendy!
Which celebrities have the best hair in your book?
Jennifer Anniston is a great example of the mid-length crop. Nicole Kidman looks amazing with curly or straight hair. Jennifer Lopez is another favorite. Her hair is always glamorous, trendy, and natural looking.
What’s your advice when it comes to hair product?
My advice is to simplify and make it easy for yourself so you have a higher chance of being successful. Cocktailing 5 different hair products can get very confusing – it’s hard to know what to put on first, and what proportion to use. Give yourself a break and cut it down to 1, maybe 2 products to get the look you want. For the fall, I’m loving the glamorous, Old Hollywood look, and my go-to products are a gel and a medium-hold hairspray. There are a lot of different hair products out there, but gel and hairspray were two of the original contenders. What better way to get an authentic mid-century look than with variations of the products that were actually used at the time?
