When did you start doing hair? What is your background?
I started doing hair when I was a little girl. I loved pulling out the basket of accessories to play with my mom's hair. She always said it relaxed her. My family had a lot of patience and trust with me. I gave a cousin a stylish mullet for years, permed my aunt's hair in high School, and styled girlfriends' hair before the prom. My first apprenticeship was while I was living in Tahoe but my formal training really happened after moving to Dallas. I trained for a year as a stylist and then moved into a color apprenticeship for another year. I worked with some of the most talented people in the city during those years and I am forever grateful to them.
Is there a certain color service you specialize in?
I specialize in creating a natural highlight that grows out with a soft line at the base. I create a rich brunettes with long lasting vibrancy and also do color corrections. My main goal in every color service is to keep the hair healthy because healthy hair is beautiful hair.
What's your favorite thing about being a colorist?
I love making people smile and feel good. It's quite amazing how lifted our spirits can be when we have beautiful hair! I also love working with my hands and creating. The repetition can be relaxing for me, even on a busy day.
Which celebrity hair inspires you?
Right now, Gwen Stefani! I'm watching the voice mostly because I want to see her beauty looks. Whether she is wearing long extensions, a voluminous blowout, ponytails, or a funky up style, she rocks it all the way.
What are your favorite color trends for the holiday season? Are there any 2016 cut/color trends you're looking forward to?
Regardless of the season, I love hair color that looks effortless and natural. I love high shine and freshly cut ends. This is a look that is always on point for me. Although I love classic and natural hair, anything goes during the holiday season. I never shy away from a complex color -- the goal is to give the person in my chair the color of their dreams. For the holidays, I'd suggest updo styles for longer hair, and a textured style for short cuts. Short hair can be the perfect accessory to pair with scarves, jackets, high collars and chunky fabrics.
What's your go-to hairstyle for holiday parties?
I love wearing my hair blown out into a smooth style for holiday parties. I rarely wear this type of look because it takes a lot of time and is hard for me to do on my own. On days that I have time for a blowout I get so many compliments and every time I look in the mirror I'm a little surprised at how good my hair makes me feel!
What are your favorite hair products carried at PIN Salon?
Kevin.Murphy Motion.Lotion is my go-to for everyday, loose curls. It works perfectly for air dried (summer hair) or diffused curls. PIN Gel Mousse for enhanced, shiny, and defined curls. Kérastase Nectar Thermique for a smooth, straight style, and Kérastase Fibre Architect for added heat protection and shine before using the flat iron or curling iron. For me, Fibre Architect is a MUST before using heat on my hair. Better yet, all of these products are available to purchase at PIN Salon!
How would you describe the results of the hair you color?
Oh, there are a few different answers to this question because my client changes throughout the day. Mainly, my guests have healthy and effortless styles which look natural and grow out really well.
What are your tips for maintaining color or caring for hair during the winter?
I believe in using a sulfate-free shampoo if you shampoo more than twice a week. Use a deep conditioner once a week or at least twice a month. If you have a little extra time when you visit the salon, schedule an Olaplex service plus a conditioning treatment. The combination is immediately visible! I'm a huge believer in styling products too. I notice people don't normally use enough to really protect the hair well and to get the full benefit from it. Add a little more and watch how it takes the struggle out of your styling efforts!
